The question
How does a young person learn to see the future differently? We believe it starts with the picture we hold of ourselves and the world around us.
So the Frikomic artists first explored how they see themselves as youth facilitators, then took that into sessions with young people across Cuba.
What we did
01
A contest to start
With the Cuban Frikomic group we opened a contest called La Nueva Escuela, The New School. Everyone was invited to pick a historical character and draw them with their own stamp. Some drawings were published and received feedback from award-winning editorial cartoonists.
02
Training the facilitators
The Frikomic artists trained in using cartoons in youth empowerment programmes, and shared their own artistic reflections as facilitators.
03
A workshop
Cuban cartoonist Miguel Morales Madrigal gave a workshop on his techniques and told what being a cartoonist means to him.
04
Youth programme
Frikomic and TNM kicked off a programme with young people across Cuba. They learned the difference between a cartoon and an editorial cartoon, where the power of the idea is central, and used cartoons as a tool for dialogue by sketching their ideas of the future.
